Episode 01: WTF Are We Doing?

Jennifer Edwards Emmi was the darling of Colorado's animal rights movement, a lawyer who fought for the voiceless. Then came the birthday party where she held a knife to her husband's throat as their children watched in horror.

On January 25, 2021, almost a year after that party, Jennifer stood in handcuffs at a Denver courthouse. The charge: conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. The alleged targets: her ex-husband, Donald "Donnie" Emmi, and his girlfriend, Karen Santos.

In the span of twelve months, Jennifer had accumulated a staggering list of 38 charges ranging from domestic violence and stalking to child abuse and attempting to influence public servants to running over her neighbor’s apple tree. But how did a woman once invited to the governor's mansion end up behind bars, her reputation in tatters?

Before her fall from grace, Jennifer was the face of animal advocacy in Colorado. She founded the Animal Law Center, ran a nonprofit rescue, and even appeared on the cover of Super Lawyers magazine. Her legislation protecting dogs from police shootings was signed into law, cementing her status as a respected legal mind.

Now, she serves a ten-year prison sentence, inmate number 2175327.

The prosecution's case seems airtight. A dangerous woman, unhinged and violent, finally brought to justice. It's a narrative that fits neatly into our understanding of crime and punishment.

But what if there's more to this story?

Our two-year investigation has uncovered a second possibility—one never explored by authorities, never aired in court, never scrutinized by the media. It suggests a calculated plan of destruction, a husband's scheme to rid himself of his wife while keeping their children and assets. A plot to manipulate Jennifer's mental and medical state, isolate her from support, and ultimately frame her for a crime she may not have intended to commit.

Two versions of events. Two Jennifer Edwards Emmis. Which one is real?

In this Mysterials debut, we'll peel back the layers of this complex case. We'll examine evidence that raises troubling questions about the nature of truth and justice. We'll hear from those closest to Jennifer, Donnie, and Karen, shining a light on the shadows where crucial facts may be hiding.
